First Selectman Dan Steward said last week he was disappointed with a few line items in the $70.5 million 2008-2009 budget passed earlier this month by the Representative Town Meeting.
“We made some major cuts that might be difficult to recover from,” he said. Steward disagreed with the $1 million cut toward a capital fund for school renovation.
“The RTM decided to save now and spend later,” he said.
Steward said the RTM made the decision to try to lessen the tax impact on residents during a property revaluation year. But Steward said it is unlikely there will be a delay the town’s plans to renovate all of its schools by 2013.
“The reduction should not impede anything,” he said.
Overall Steward said he his pleased that the town government kept the municipal budget increase below two percent.
