29 Drug Arrests in New London Last Week

Posted by Stephen Chupaska on Mar 25 2008, 03:37 PM

The New London Police Department scored some headlines this morning over at the Mothership  due to 29 drug busts in the last week.

NLPD, along with the Statewide Narcotics Taskforce, made 15 arrests on Thursday , along with 11 on Friday, capping off the weekend with three more on Sunday.

Freshman Councilor Michael Buscetto, who heads the Public Safety Committee that has oversight on the police department, called the spate of arrests “phenomenal” and “impressive.”

“Once you set this type of precedent, drug users are going to start going in different directions,” he said.

Buscetto said the arrests should lead to better morale on the force and in the city.

And it seems the narcotics crackdown has become a trend along the shoreline.

According to the New Haven Register, 36 arrest warrants for drug dealers were issued in Clinton and Westbrook during February.

The arrests add to the NLPD’s run of good publicity in the past month. The police union became the first city department to accept mandatory drug testing, also one of Buscetto’s initiatives.

Residents can give anonymous tips about drug activity to the NLPD at 860-447-9107.

Well, these bust may lead to better morale on the force, but how are we citizens supposed to feel about them. The proliferation of drug abuse in this region is a real shame. I wonder how many of these 'repeat offenders' will be picked up again in a few days, weeks, months...
