For women in need of hope and stability, Community of Hope (COH), located within the Pleasant Valley Community of Prayer building in Groton, is hosting its first golf tournament. The event will raise funds toward the purchase of a women’s recovery house.
COH is a charitable, Christian–centered, nonprofit organization, whose mission is to assist recovering substance-abusers—after detox—and qualifying homeless people. COH is designed to create and facilitate opportunities and resources that help to re-establish participants as productive, contributing members of their community.
The 2008 COH Open Golf Tournament will be held at River Ridge Golf Course in Griswold on Friday, Aug. 22 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Registration must be completed by Aug. 10 to participate and will provide a box lunch, greens fees, and cart. Prizes will include free rounds of golf, restaurant gift certificates, and more.
Julie Brousseau, co-chair of the golf tournament committee, said the event will be run entirely by volunteers so all proceeds may be directed to COH. Finding a permanent location for women in need, she noted, is COH’s primary goal.
“We want to help these women stay in a clean sober environment,” Brousseau said, explaining that when many women return to their homes, after experiencing substance abuse problems, it’s easier for them to fall back into old habits.
“We would like to raise $5,000,” Brosseau said, adding that a donation of a building would be beneficial, too.
